Berbagai aktivitas dan mobilisasi selama bertahun-tahun, partisipasi wanita di pentas politik sebagai hubungan sejajar dengan laki-laki belum juga menuai keberhasilan. Di masa kini, langkah menghubungkan demokrasi dengan kesetaraan gendermerupakan prinsip yang sudah diterima secara meluas. Salah satu faktor penting dari setiap kerangka kerja demokrasi adalah prinsip hak asasi manusia, termasuk di dalamnya hak-hak politik bagi laki-laki dan wanita.
